English Placement Test (EPT) Requirement

Newly admitted California State University students must show they are ready for college English by meeting the English Placement Test (EPT) requirement. There are several ways to meet this requirement, all of which are described below.

Ways to Meet the EPT Requirement

  • Early Assessment Program (EAP) – A status of "Ready for college-level English courses" indicates that students have met the EPT requirement.
  • National Standardized Tests – A qualifying score on one of the following college placement tests fulfills the EPT requirement:

    TestRequired score for EPT requirement
    SAT

550 or more on the critical reading section  --or--

680 or more on the SAT writing portion

ACT24 or more on the English Test
AP3 or more on Advanced Placement Language & Composition or Literature & Composition

  • Community College Course – A grade of C or better in a qualifying English transfer course at a community college meets the EPT requirement.
  • English Placement Test (EPT) – Unless students meet the requirement in one of the ways described above, they must take the EPT before enrolling at the CSU.

Warning for not meeting the EPT requirement

Warning: Failure to Meet the EPT Requirement Costs Time and Money

  • Students cannot enroll in for-credit CSU college English classes until they meet the requirement.
  • They must spend time taking remedial English classes during their freshman year until they meet the requirement.
  • They will graduate later because they get no degree credit for remedial English classes.
  • They may have to pay additional charges for the remedial classes.
  • If they do not pass the remedial classes by the end of their first year, they may be disenrolled from the university.
