“Hi. My name is Julie Detloff and I teach at Ridgeview High School in Bakersfield, California. What I've discovered through using expository reading and writing modules is once I taught the kids how to read and write and think, then, ‘when I did get to teach the sacred text,’ they actually had something to say about them and to think about them in a different way and were able to write in a way I never imagined my students could. The beautiful thing about the modules is it teaches the kids critical reading, critical writing, and critical thinking skills. And that critical thinking skill is what's been missing in education. And I'm not saying that these expository reading and writing modules are the full answer, because there still has to be a balance between non-fiction and literature, as we know, but I definitely think this is a huge part of the answer.”
